A pilot of the “AI-Powered Materials Development for Military Educators” workshop took place on 21, 23 and 25 September 2026. It focused on practical ways to use AI assistants when preparing resources for professional military education, with educators retaining responsibility for their accuracy, relevance and suitability for learners.
The three-session online programme was structured around a group project. Its sequence moved from choosing an educational topic and outlining an instructional approach to developing materials and presenting them for discussion. This structure linked the introduction of AI tools to a concrete teaching need rather than to an isolated software demonstration.
A central topic was structured prompting: specifying a role, task, context and desired output format. The programme explored how instructions should vary when producing lesson plans, assessments, study guides or slide outlines. It also introduced opportunities to develop presentation, audio and video resources with NotebookLM.
Quality assurance received particular attention. The programme addressed invented sources, incorrect doctrinal terminology and assessment questions that could be answered without engaging with the source material. Critical review and revision were therefore integral to the proposed workflow, alongside rules for handling data in public AI tools.
The final session was designed to combine group presentations with reflection on what worked and what could be improved. The evaluation plan included reviewing initial expectations and comparing self-reported confidence before and after the workshop. The pilot emphasised practical resource development and informed judgement about where AI could support instructional preparation.
