NATO DEEP eAcademys started initial community tests of a new AI-assisted live interpretation solution for its BigBlueButton video conferencing environment. This testing phase provides an opportunity to introduce the project and gather practical feedback as development continues.
The tool is designed to reduce language barriers during online classes, workshops and multinational meetings. Each speaker will select the language they are using, while participants will independently choose how to follow the session: through the original audio, live translated captions or—at a later stage—spoken interpretation delivered through a separate language channel. Participants will be able to change their preferred language without leaving the meeting.
The current development matrix includes 13 languages: English, Ukrainian, Arabic, Polish, French, Romanian, Mongolian, Azerbaijani, Armenian, Bosnian, Spanish, Georgian and Serbian. The solution is being designed around participant choice, accessibility, privacy and meeting continuity. Translation will run only when requested, the original BigBlueButton audio will remain independent of the AI service, and raw audio and transcripts will not be retained by default.
